The next meeting of the Holy Name Men’s Club will be held Monday, May 1 at 8 p.m. in the cafeteria. Horseshoes will
be held at 6 p.m. behind the fieldhouse. There is a $2 entry fee. Refreshments provided.
The meeting night is changing to the first Monday of the month in May because of golf league play on Tuesdays.
April Meeting: President Rick Peterson called the 8 p.m. meeting to order at 8:12 p.m. Fr. Roger led the opening prayer.
Secretary’s Report: The secretary’s report was read by Vice President Duffy Vaughan. Secretary Kevin Cole
returns to monthly meeting duties on May 1 and is glad to be back. Work prevents attendance on Tuesdays.
The secretary wishes to thank the VP, the P and other VIPS for keeping things QT while he was AWOL.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Fred Bender predicted a rosy net profit from our 25th year of fish fries. He also
noted that the club will need about $5,000 that profit to replace a deep fryer.
Athletic Report: AD Ken Long that the eighth-grade boys fished the season at 15-4 after placing third at the always
competitive St. Margaret Mary tournament.
Mr. Long also reminds us that the annual Holy Name Athletic Banquet will be held Friday, May 5, in the cafeteria. Dinner
at 6 p.m. to be followed by a talk by former Nebraska tight end Vershan Jackson.
Old Business: The 25th annual “Holy Name Frydays of Lent” fish fries produced a record 15,319 customers.
Four times we topped 2,400 dinner guests. That’s never been done before. Our official crowd counts: 1,757 (pre-Lenten
kickoff); 2,047; 2,423; 1,787 (St. Patrick’s Day); 2,486 (setting a single night record); 2,415 and 2,404. Our
average was 2,188 (another record).
Congratulations and thanks to all the volunteers who have made the fish fry one of Omaha’s finest traditions.
One of our newer traditions, Breakfast with the Men’s Club, is moving to the first Sunday of each month starting
on June 4. There will not be a May pancake breakfast.
New Business: Not much in the way of new business. Pat Albright volunteered that he is leaving for the Bahamas on vacation
on April 29. Four to five members made motions to urge the U.S. to close its borders on April 30 “for the good of the
country.”
News & Notes: Some leftover moments from the Holy Name Frydays of Lent. The 2006 fish fries were besieged by politicians
because of the election year. A young man named Jim Esch, who is running for the House of Representatives, gets our “All
Business” award. We like politicians who quietly go about their business cleaning tables. ... A couple of other mentions
(and you know we can’t talk about everyone that deserves it) include Tom LaHood for the “Golden Throat”
award for attending all seven nights as our most genial master of ceremonies. We wonder if Tom is sometimes overheard singing
“Happy Birthday” in his sleep. ... Bill Wilson gets the “Man Who Holds Us Together” award and if you
don’t know why, we can’t help you. .... The April attendance drawing went to Denny Peterson, who recently
turned 63 and was spotted celebrating with some of his brothers at the Nifty Bar. Speculation on Denny’s last visit
to the Nifty included “1966 and Never.” ... The Calcutta drawing went to Rick Peterson. No report on how much
was claimed. ... Horseshoe winners: 1, Pat Albright-Dave Kozol. 2, Mike Albright-Bill Wilson. 3, Ron Miller-Jim
Watson. ... The All-School Reunion Party will be held Saturday, June 10 in the Performing Arts Center (aka Little Gym). The
party will be hosted by the classes of 1976, 1986 and 1966. The Tony Pflug All-Star Band featuring Mary Frances and Jeff Morris
will begin at 8 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and includes all beverages. All alumni, parishioners and friends of Holy Name
are invited.
